Language is not merely a tool-it is the very structure through which thought is formed, knowledge is preserved, and intelligence is expressed. Foundations of Natural Language Processing presents a rigorous and unified exploration of how machines engage with this uniquely human capability, transforming language into a domain of mathematical, computational, and cognitive inquiry. Bridging linguistic theory with statistical modeling, linear algebra, and modern deep learning, this book offers a comprehensive and principled treatment of NLP-from symbolic foundations to transformer-based architectures and large language models. Unlike conventional texts that prioritize implementation alone, this work emphasizes conceptual clarity, mathematical rigor, and structural understanding, equipping readers to reason deeply about language technologies rather than merely apply them. Through a coherent transformation framework-from raw input to latent representations and meaningful outputs-the book connects classical methods with contemporary advances, including embeddings, autoencoders, discourse modeling, and agentic NLP systems. Each concept is developed with formal precision, supported by detailed derivations, illustrative examples, and critical insights into limitations and future directions. Designed for advanced students, researchers, and practitioners, this text serves not only as a learning resource but as a foundation for innovation-guiding readers to build systems that are not only powerful, but interpretable, principled, and aligned with the deeper nature of language itself.
